Uganda Visa & Entry Requirements: A First-Timer's Guide

Everything to sort out before you fly — visa options, vaccination rules, currency and what to expect on arrival at Entebbe International Airport.

The paperwork side of planning a Uganda trip is far simpler than most first-time visitors expect, but it does need to be sorted before you leave home rather than at the airport. Here's what to know, organised in the order you'll actually need it.

Important Note Visa rules, fees and vaccination requirements can change. The information below reflects the general process at the time of writing — always confirm current requirements on Uganda's official immigration portal, or ask our team, before booking flights or finalising documents.

Do I Need a Visa for Uganda?

The great majority of international visitors require a visa to enter Uganda. Requirements and exemptions vary by nationality and change periodically, so the essential first step is checking your specific requirement against Uganda's official immigration website, or asking us to confirm it for you as part of your itinerary planning.

How the E-Visa Process Works

Uganda's visa system operates primarily online through an official e-visa portal. In general, the process involves creating an account, completing an application form, uploading a passport photo and passport bio-page scan, paying the applicable fee online, and waiting for approval, which is typically issued as an electronic approval letter to print and carry with you.

Travel Tip Apply at least two to three weeks before your trip to allow processing time and a buffer for any additional information requests. Avoid unofficial third-party visa websites, which often charge inflated fees — apply only through Uganda's official government portal.

The East Africa Tourist Visa

If your trip also includes Kenya and/or Rwanda, the East Africa Tourist Visa is worth investigating. It's a single visa permitting travel across all three countries within its validity period, avoiding the cost and paperwork of applying separately for each. It's especially useful for travellers combining Uganda gorilla trekking with a Kenyan safari or a Rwanda extension.

Yellow Fever and Vaccination Requirements

Uganda requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for entry, in the form of an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (commonly known as the "yellow card"). This should be arranged well in advance of travel, since the vaccine typically needs to be administered at least ten days before departure to be considered valid, and some countries require it to be given at designated yellow fever vaccination centres.

Did You Know? Immigration officials at Entebbe do sometimes check yellow fever certificates on arrival, and travellers without valid proof can face delays, on-the-spot vaccination, or in some cases denied entry — so this is not a document to leave to chance.

Beyond the mandatory yellow fever requirement, we recommend consulting a travel health clinic or your doctor several weeks before departure about other recommended precautions for the region, such as malaria prevention.

Arriving at Entebbe International Airport

Entebbe International Airport, on the shores of Lake Victoria roughly 40 kilometres from Kampala, is Uganda's main international gateway. Arrival typically involves passing through immigration (where your e-visa approval and yellow fever certificate may be checked), collecting luggage, and clearing customs. Our airport pickup service means you'll be met on arrival regardless of your flight's timing.

Currency and Money Matters

  • The Ugandan Shilling (UGX) is the local currency; US dollars are also widely accepted for larger payments like lodges and permits, though small purchases are usually easier in shillings.
  • If bringing US dollars, note that many businesses only accept notes dated 2013 or later, in good condition without marks or tears.
  • ATMs are available in major towns and at the airport, though less reliable in remote park areas — carry sufficient cash for rural stretches of your trip.
  • Tipping guides, drivers and lodge staff is customary and appreciated; budget for this separately from your main trip costs.

Document Checklist

  • Passport valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates, with blank pages for stamps.
  • Approved e-visa printout or East Africa Tourist Visa approval.
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate (the "yellow card").
  • Travel insurance documentation, including any adventure-activity or medical evacuation coverage.
  • Printed or digital copies of lodge and permit confirmations.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Applying for the e-visa at the last minute, leaving no buffer for processing delays.
  • Forgetting the yellow fever certificate, which can cause real complications at immigration.
  • Bringing older or damaged US dollar bills that many vendors will refuse.
  • Using unofficial visa-processing websites that charge significant markups over the official fee.
  • Not checking passport expiry dates carefully enough in advance of travel.
